Cartier and Boss Shield Storefronts Against Expected Youth Rallies

Heavy wooden planks went up over luxurious storefronts along Hamburg’s inner city streets on Friday afternoon. Nearly 9,000 participants linked to the “Gen Z regelt” movement are expected to march from Jungfernstieg on Saturday to protest military conscription, according to mopo.de.

Local Retailers Reject Alarms After Police Briefings

While international chains swiftly protected their glass facades, local business representatives expressed a much calmer outlook.

Mimi Sewalski, city manager representing 850 businesses in the downtown area and HafenCity, stated on Friday morning that overall anxiety had decreased significantly over the preceding two weeks. Sewalski told mopo.de that initial worries stemmed from recent unrest in France, but direct communication from local police reassured retailers. Sewalski noted that the initial questions were worse than the actual worry, mentioning that the owner of a small shop had even inquired where to obtain wooden boards.

Authorities Remove Paving Stones Along the March Route

Sewalski explained that safety measures would only be implemented on a small scale, such as outdoor gastronomy venues clearing away their chairs, adding, In der City wird wenig verbarrikadiert werden.

Consequently, authorities removed stored paving stones from a construction site along the Mönckebergstraße route and secured construction vehicles to prevent potential flashpoints. Sewalski stated that they wanted to avoid provoking anything unnecessary, noting that while anything can happen at any demonstration, she does not expect major issues for Saturday. She also pointed out that shops and arcades would be closed anyway due to the Reformationstag holiday, expressing confusion as to why some chains like jeweler Wempe had announced Saturday store closures for a holiday. Sewalski further remarked that the Apple Store is always popular during such unrest.

Global Chains Rely on Foreign Unrest Memories

Despite assurances from city management that shops will remain closed anyway due to the Reformationstag holiday, several prominent international brands took aggressive preventive measures. Jewelers Cartier at Neuer Wall, Boss at Schleusenbrücke, and Patek Philippe at Jungfernstieg installed wooden boards by Friday noon.

Sewalski noted that global chains frequently rely on past experiences with civil unrest in cities like Paris or Rome rather than local police assessments, leading them to clear displays and shield windows proactively.
