Céline Dion has released a new single, “Bonjour, pardon, merci,” her second musical offering in less than three months. Following her triumphant performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the track signals a sharp shift in the singer’s creative direction as she prepares for a potential return to the stage.
Ycare and the Shift in Production
The song marks a distinct departure from the team behind her previous release, “Dansons,” which featured Jean-Jacques Goldman. According to Le Parisien, the new single was written and composed by Ycare, a singer-songwriter who rose to prominence after appearing on the French television show Nouvelle Star in 2008.
Production was handled by Renaud Rebillaud, a staple of French pop who has worked with Gims, Amir, and Vitaa. The recording took place in Las Vegas, Dion’s home. Ycare described the vocal performance as “saisissante” (striking), noting that Dion opted for a lower, more restrained register. It is a performance that maintains her signature power while moving away from the high-register lyrical style often associated with her earlier work.
The Philosophy of Ho’oponopono
The song’s core refrain—”Bonjour, pardon, merci, je t’aime”—is rooted in a specific philosophical practice. In a press statement, Ycare explained that the lyrics were inspired by Ho’oponopono, an ancient Hawaiian practice centered on forgiveness, gratitude, and love.
Ycare said he wrote the song while reflecting on the personal challenges individuals face, positioning the phrase “je t’aime” (I love you) as the foundation of the composition. This release comes after a difficult period for Dion, who announced in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that forced the cancellation of her “Courage” world tour.
Building a Modern Repertoire
While no official announcement regarding a new studio album has been made, industry reports suggest that Dion is actively gathering material. Le Parisien reports that the singer has received submissions from various artists and producers, including Grand Corps Malade, Santa, Angèle, and Charlotte Cardin.
These potential collaborations suggest a move toward a more contemporary sound, blending her established vocal identity with modern production styles. For now, her team has declined to release a formal timeline for an album, keeping the focus on individual single releases and upcoming live engagements.
A Milestone Return to Paris
Dion’s return to live performance is centered on a series of concerts in France. Following her appearance at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she is scheduled to perform a run of 26 shows at the Plénitude Arena (formerly Paris La Défense Arena), beginning September 12. These performances mark her first major concert series in the country in several years, serving as a significant milestone in her recovery and return to the public eye.
