(Johannesburg = Yonhap News) Correspondent Na Confirmed = The Associated Press reported that a drone attacked a mosque on the 11th (local time) in Sudan, Africa, which is in the midst of a civil war, killing two children and injuring 13 people.
The Sudan Doctors’ Association (SDN), a civil war monitoring group in Sudan, announced that a drone belonging to the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked a mosque early this morning in the city of Allahad, North Kordofan State, central Sudan.
It was reported that children were participating in Quranic classes at the temple at the time.
SDN said the targeting of children inside mosques showed a dangerous escalation in violence against civilians.
Meanwhile, AFP reported that a warehouse of the World Food Program (WFP) was attacked in Kadugil, the capital of South Kordofan Province, and the building and stored food were damaged.
Although it was not clear who was responsible for the attack, RSF claimed that government forces were responsible.
In Sudan, which has experienced frequent civil wars and political instability since independence in 1956, a civil war broke out between government forces and the RSF on April 15, 2023, and continues to this day.
Currently, government forces are in control of northern, central, and eastern Sudan, and while RSF occupies parts of the western and southern regions, it is reported that a front line has recently been formed mainly centered in the southern region.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 40,000 people have died so far due to the conflict between the two sides. It is estimated that there are more than 12 million refugees.
Last November, RSF declared a three-month ceasefire. The following month, Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris attempted to end the civil war by submitting a peace plan to the UN Security Council that included a ceasefire monitored by the UN, African Union (AU), and Arab League (AL) and a complete withdrawal of RSF from occupied areas, but there was no clear result.
U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said 90 civilians have been killed and 142 injured in Sudan in the past two weeks alone due to drone strikes.
