Foreign Ministers Meet in Yuxi to Consolidate Border Ceasefire

China, Cambodia, and Thailand held a high-level trilateral meeting on December 29, 2025, in Yuxi, Yunnan province, securing agreements to solidify a recent border ceasefire and rebuild mutual trust. Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Foreign Minister, hosted Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn, Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, and senior military leaders from all three nations, sn.china-embassy.gov.cn reported.

The diplomatic gathering followed intensive shuttle diplomacy by a Chinese special envoy who visited the region four times. Wang stated that Beijing utilized the Global Security Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping to offer mediation and good offices after border conflicts broke out between Cambodia and Thailand. Military departments from both Southeast Asian nations engaged in face-to-face talks during the Yuxi summit, resulting in positive stances on easing tensions and restoring normal bilateral channels.

Trilateral Consensus Centers on Ceasefire Protection

The participating ministers established three core principles to prevent a return to hostilities. Wang emphasized that the newly won ceasefire must not stall or face compromise, stating that renewed conflict contradicts the desires of the public and Beijing alike.

Second, the diplomatic roadmap requires steady, incremental progress through continuous communication and dialogue on an equal footing. Third, the talks aimed to heal the diplomatic rifts caused by the fighting between the two neighboring countries. Wang offered expanded Chinese assistance in ceasefire monitoring, humanitarian relief, and demining operations to support the normalization process.

Both Prak Sokhonn and Sihasak Phuangketkeow expressed appreciation for the diplomatic platform provided by Beijing and acknowledged China’s constructive role in facilitating the negotiations.
