China’s Electric Vehicle Road Trips Surge in Popularity

As the Spring Festival holiday concludes, a growing number of Chinese families are discovering the convenience and cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles (EVs) for long-distance travel. A recent journey by Ms. Wang and her family, covering 2,942 kilometers across seven cities, exemplifies this trend, highlighting the increasing viability of EVs for holiday excursions.

A Family’s 2,942-Kilometer EV Adventure

Ms. Wang’s family embarked on an 11-day road trip from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, traveling through Fuzhou, Ganzhou, and Guangzhou before returning home. Their total expenditure for the trip amounted to approximately 7,000 to 8,000 yuan (roughly $1,013 to $1,158), demonstrating the potential for cost savings with EVs. The journey wasn’t solely about reaching destinations; it was about the experience itself.

The family opted to spend two nights inside their vehicle during stops in Huizhou and Shantou, allowing them to stay close to scenic areas and enjoy a flexible travel pace. Ms. Wang noted the quality time spent communicating within the car, away from the distractions of mobile devices, transforming the vehicle into a “private space for bonding” and a venue for school-related reading.

Growing Confidence in Energy Infrastructure

A key factor driving the rise in long-distance EV travel is the expanding charging infrastructure and the diminishing “range anxiety” associated with electric vehicles. Ms. Wang’s family utilized a model with battery-swapping capabilities, strategically planning stops at service areas equipped with swapping facilities to manage their energy levels effectively.

Even with a low battery level, the vehicle could still travel several kilometers, further alleviating concerns about running out of power. This confidence is bolstered by the significant expansion of China’s national charging network. By the end of December 2025, China had a total of 20.092 million charging points nationwide, representing a year-on-year growth of 49.7 percent, according to data released by the National Energy Administration.

The Expanding NEV Market in China

The surge in EV road trips mirrors the growth within China’s automotive sector. In January 2025, both production and sales in China’s auto market reached record highs, exceeding 34 million units. Notably, NEV production and sales surpassed 16 million units, with NEVs accounting for over 50 percent of all domestic new car sales, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

While NEV penetration is already high in major cities, growth is now shifting towards smaller cities and rural areas. Lang Xuehong, deputy secretary general of the China Automobile Dealers Association, noted that NEV penetration in cities above Tier-3 has reached approximately 40 percent, with Tier-1 cities like Shenzhen exceeding 50 percent. Cities below Tier-3 currently have around 20 percent penetration, indicating substantial growth potential as charging networks expand into townships across provinces like Shandong and Guangdong.

As infrastructure continues to improve, long-distance EV travel is becoming a viable option for a wider range of travelers. While traditional travel methods remain popular, the experiences of families like Ms. Wang’s demonstrate that the infrastructure is now in place to support alternative choices, offering consumers the flexibility to choose between proven methods and the emerging possibilities of electric road trips.
