Lancashire, UK – In a unique coastal defense strategy, discarded Christmas trees are being used to rebuild and reinforce sand dunes along the Lancashire coastline, protecting communities from the increasing threat of rising sea levels and storm surges. The initiative, spearheaded by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust and supported by the Environment Agency, has seen hundreds of volunteers burying tens of thousands of trees south of Blackpool.

A Festive Frontier Against Climate Change

What began over three decades ago as a small-scale effort has ramped up in recent years as the impacts of climate change become more pronounced. Since the mid-1800s, Lancashire’s coastline has lost an estimated 80% of its original sand dunes due to coastal development, leaving communities vulnerable to erosion and flooding . Sand dunes act as a natural barrier, absorbing wave energy and providing a flexible defense against storms.

How It Works: From Tinsel to Tidewall

Volunteers haul tinsel-free Christmas trees into shallow trenches along the beach. The trees, donated from across Lancashire, are partially buried, allowing natural processes to take over. The branches trap windblown sand, gradually building up or reinforcing existing dunes. These nascent dunes can grow to approximately 3 meters (10 feet) high .

The Scale of the Problem and the Solution

The UK has lost roughly 30% of its sand dunes since 1900, with two-thirds of that loss occurring in the last 30 years . Sea levels around the UK have risen by approximately 19.5cm during that period, exceeding the global average . Last week, 650 volunteers buried around 2,000 trees on Lytham beach .

More Than Just Coastal Protection: A Habitat for Wildlife

The project offers benefits beyond coastal defense. The newly formed dunes provide a vital habitat for wildlife, including sand lizards, which had not been seen in the area for about 60 years before being reintroduced in 2020 . Conservationists have observed a thriving population and evidence of breeding .

Looking Ahead

While the current dunes are expected to provide protection for the foreseeable future, the Lancashire Wildlife Trust anticipates the need to build dunes upwards rather than outwards within the next five years as sea levels continue to rise .
