Christy Carlson Romano Reveals Positive Cancer Screening Results

Former Disney Channel star Christy Carlson Romano shared in an emotional Instagram video on Tuesday, February 17, that she recently received positive results from a precautionary cancer screening. Romano, 41, underwent testing due to a family history of the disease, and is now preparing for a PET scan.

Family History and Initial Results

Both of Romano’s parents have been diagnosed with cancer – her mother successfully beat the disease, while her father ultimately succumbed to it. Her maternal grandmother also died of lung cancer, prompting Romano and her husband, Brendan Rooney, to undergo screenings. While Rooney’s results were negative, Romano’s were not.

“My husband’s [results] came back completely negative,” Romano shared in the video. “Mine did not arrive back negative.”

Next Steps: PET Scan

Romano is now scheduled to undergo a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan, a specialized imaging test used to detect signs of cancer, heart disease, and certain brain disorders Cleveland Clinic. She noted she is “fighting with companies to get the scanning covered.”

Inspired by James Van Der Beek’s Passing

Romano’s announcement came shortly after the death of actor James Van Der Beek, who died February 11 after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer in August 2023. Romano shared a connection to Van Der Beek, stating he was a pillar of their community in Austin, Texas, and frequently raised money for charitable causes.

“Cancer is everywhere. That’s why I got this test,” she said.

Vulnerability and Encouragement

Romano admitted to feeling “in disbelief” about the results and expressed a desire to focus on positive aspects of her life, including a recently filmed movie and her upcoming memoir. She also revealed she had been hesitant to share the news, fearing she would come across as “cheesy,” but ultimately felt it was her “duty” to encourage others to get screened.

“It’s a very vulnerable moment for me,” Romano said. “Let’s preserve the good vibes going and I’ll keep you posted as I get more information.”

Husband’s Support

In the comments section of her Instagram post, Romano’s husband, Brendan Rooney, expressed his unwavering support, writing, “You can do it, my beautiful wife. We will solve this and destroy any problems that arise. I love you beyond words.”
