City of Darwin Announces Community Grant Recipients for 2024
The City of Darwin has unveiled the recipients of its Community Grants Program for the second round of 2024, allocating funds to support initiatives that foster cultural, environmental, and social engagement across the territory. The program, which distributes $100,000 annually in two rounds, aims to empower community organizations to deliver projects that strengthen inclusivity and diversity in Darwin.

Focus on Inclusivity and Community Engagement
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis highlighted the importance of the grants in driving community capacity and collaboration. “Each year, we allocate $100,000 for the Community Grants Program, split into two rounds, which is allocated to projects that contribute to active reconciliation, forge partnerships between community groups, and encourage active engagement by underrepresented populations,” he said.
The funded projects span a range of activities, from cultural festivals to environmental initiatives, reflecting the city’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive society. Notable recipients include:
- Football NT: Will host the Refugee World Cup, an annual event celebrated on Australia Day, bringing together over 1,000 Darwin locals from diverse backgrounds for a football tournament.
- Workforce Plus: Initiating a sensory community garden designed to be inclusive and accessible for individuals with dementia and disabilities.
- Sri Lankan Australian Friendship Association: Organizing a community-driven Sri Lankan New Year festival to celebrate cultural heritage and promote cross-cultural understanding.
Long-Term Vision for Community Development
The grants are part of a broader strategy to address social equity and environmental sustainability in Darwin. By supporting grassroots projects, the city aims to create spaces where diverse populations can thrive. “When we work together, we can achieve great things,” Vatskalis added. “I encourage community groups to keep applying for these grant opportunities to help facilitate events that benefit the entire community.”
Applications for future rounds of the program remain open, with the city urging organizations to submit proposals that align with its goals of fostering resilience and cultural enrichment.
Looking Ahead
As Darwin continues to grow, the Community Grants Program stands as a testament to the city’s dedication to equity and collective progress. With ongoing support for initiatives that bridge cultural divides and promote environmental stewardship, the program underscores the power of community-driven solutions in shaping a more inclusive future.
