Club América announced the signing of Colombian striker Miguel Borja on Thursday, August 20, 2026, adding the seasoned attacker to a roster currently working to stabilize its front line for the Apertura 2026 tournament, according to reports from Agencias via El Tiempo and La Razón. Borja arrives in Liga MX from UAE Pro League side Al-Wasl, completing the twenty-second transfer of his professional career.
Transfer Details and Squad Integration at Club América
According to La Razón, Miguel Borja signed a one-year contract with Los Azulcremas featuring an option for an additional year, tying him to the Coapa club through August 2027. The signing makes Borja the third official reinforcement for Club América in the Apertura 2026 season. Manager Guillermo Almada welcomed the forward via a social media video featuring handwritten attributes describing the player as a “goleador, movilidad, generosidad, solidaridad y esfuerzo,” as reported by El Tiempo.
Borja enters a crowded attacking group at América that already includes Henry Martín, Alejandro ‘Coco’ Cárdenas, and Patricio Salas, though none of the existing strikers have firmly secured the starting center-forward role four rounds into the current tournament, according to La Razón. América previously attempted to sign the Colombian forward in 2018, but the deal did not materialize until eight years later.
A Career Defined by Extensive Mobility Across Six Countries
Reporting from El Tiempo outlines Borja’s extensive journeyman career, spanning 14 different teams across six distinct countries: Colombia, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, and now Mexico. The striker began his professional career with Deportivo Cali, though he spent most of his early tenure loaned out to various Colombian sides including Inter Bogotá, Cúcuta, and Inter Palmira.

European and South American stints followed. Italian club Livorno acquired Borja before loaning him to Olimpo, Santa Fe, and Inter Palmira. He later found prominent success with Atlético Nacional, which led to a transfer to Palmeiras in Brazil. Palmeiras subsequently loaned Borja in two separate stints to Junior de Barranquilla, as well as to Grêmio. Junior eventually purchased his rights before selling him to River Plate in Argentina.
Recent Performance at Al-Wasl Prior to Liga MX Move
Before finalizing his move to Mexican football, Borja played in the Middle East for Al-Wasl during the closing stretch of the 2025–2026 season, following a failed transfer attempt to Cruz Azul in December 2025, according to La Razón. During his tenure with Al-Wasl, Borja made 16 appearances, scored eight goals, and logged 996 minutes on the pitch, marking his first professional experience outside South America prior to arriving in Mexico.
