Battery Obsolescence a Challenge for Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Designs
Brussels – The increasing reliance on batteries in hybrid-electric propulsion systems may present a significant challenge related to replacement and obsolescence, according to Todd Spierling, principal technical fellow for electrification at Collins Aerospace. The issue of battery aging could add complexity to the design and maintenance of these next-generation aircraft.
The Battery Replacement Hurdle
Spierling highlighted the potential difficulties designers face when incorporating substantial battery capacity into hybrid-electric aircraft. As batteries age, their performance degrades, necessitating eventual replacement. This raises questions about the logistical and economic implications of maintaining a fleet of aircraft with batteries that have limited lifespans and potentially become obsolete.
Collins Aerospace’s Hybrid-Electric Progress
Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of RTX, is actively developing and testing electric drive systems for hybrid-electric propulsion. Recent tests at Collins’ Grid advanced electric power systems lab are focused on a full-scale Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofan (GTF) as reported by Aviation Week. This perform is a key step towards demonstrating hybrid-electric technology in a realistic aviation environment.
HECATE Program Milestone
Collins Aerospace is similarly involved in the European Union-backed HECATE program, having recently completed testing under the initiative according to MSN. This program aims to advance hybrid-electric flight technology and address challenges related to integration and performance.
