health Minister Simeon Brown has directed the Acting Director-General of the Ministry of Health to establish a Commission to Review all aspects of the cybersecurity breach at ManageMyHealth, New Zealand’s leading digital patient portal, which provides people with access to their health records, prescribed medications, and other features.

How the issue evolved

It is understood that about 8% of the company’s 1.8 million customers may have been affected by the breach,which came to light after the hacker/s communicated with the Company demanding US$ 60,000 thru the dark Web.

ManageMyHealth notified the National Cyber Security Center and the Ministry of Health instantly and began contacting General Practices (GPs) and issuing public statements to inform patients of the potential exposure of their data.

Early indications suggested that the breach may have involved access to patient demographic details, appointment histories, and communication logs.

At this stage, there is no confirmation that clinical notes or full medical histories were accessed, although investigations are ongoing.

The breach has raised questions about the cybersecurity resilience of private health technology providers, especially those that hold large volumes of sensitive data on behalf of the public health system.
