Conan O’Brien Breaks Silence on Rob and Michele Reiner’s Deaths

Two months after the tragic deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, comedian Conan O’Brien has publicly shared his grief and shock. The Reiners were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home in December 2025 and their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was subsequently arrested and charged with their murders.

Last Night with the Reiners

O’Brien revealed that he and his wife were among the last people to see Rob and Michele Reiner alive, having hosted a holiday party on December 13, 2025. “To have that experience of saying good night to somebody and having them depart and then find out the next day that they’re gone… I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward,” O’Brien said in an interview on “The Latest Yorker Radio Hour” podcast. “I mean, there’s no other word for it. It’s just highly — it’s so awful.”

A Profound Loss

O’Brien described the Reiners as “just such lovely people,” emphasizing his close relationship with the couple. He lauded Rob Reiner’s directorial talent, responsible for iconic films like “When Harry Met Sally…” and “The Princess Bride,” as well as his passionate political activism. “I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there — and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend,” O’Brien stated.

Reiner’s Legacy

The comedian highlighted Reiner’s significant contributions to cinema, noting that directing seven blockbuster movies within a decade was “insanity.” He specifically praised “This is Spinal Tap,” calling it a “splitting-the-atom moment” and acknowledging its profound influence on his generation. O’Brien also recalled Reiner’s appearances on his talk show, “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in 1999, and his podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,” in 2023 and 2025.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Authorities allege that Nick Reiner fatally stabbed his parents in the early morning hours of December 14, 2025. Their bodies were discovered around 12 hours later by their daughter, leading to Nick Reiner’s arrest in South Los Angeles. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder on December 16, 2025, and has yet to enter a plea. His arraignment was postponed in January after his initial attorney stepped down and was replaced by a public defender. Reports indicate Nick Reiner has a history of mental health and substance use struggles, the extent of which remains to be seen in the legal proceedings.
