Archbishop Elpidophoros Consecrates St. George Church After Fifty Years of Waiting

On October 31, 2026, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America presided over the formal Service of Consecration for St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Norwalk, Connecticut, fulfilling half a century of parish prayers and preparation. The milestone drew over 200 faithful to witness the consecration of the Holy Altar and the anointing of the building’s walls with Holy Chrism.

Vespers and the Translation of New Martyr Relics

The multi-day liturgical celebration began on Friday, October 30, 2026, with the Vespers of Consecration. During the service, Archbishop Elpidophoros processed the sacred relics of the New Martyrs of Samothraki—specifically Michael, George, Emmanuel, Theodoros, and a second George—into the church. In his homily, the Archbishop highlighted the significance of the patronal connection, noting that two of the five martyrs share the name of the parish’s patron saint.

Clergy assisting during the vespers included Chancellor of the Archdiocesan District Fr. Elias Villis, Vicar of the Archdiocesan District Fr. Peter Orfanakos, Bishop Nektarios of Diokleia, and local parish priest Fr. Nicholas Dassouras. During the gathering, Fr. Dassouras received the high Offikion of Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne, prompting an emotional response from his family and the congregation, who shouted AXIOS!

The Consecration Liturgy and Community Reactions

The Saturday morning consecration featured chanting from Fr. Cherubim Tsinoglou and the Doxologia Choir, visiting from Greece. Following the anointing of the church walls, parish priest Fr. Nicholas Dassouras addressed the congregation, stating, Today is truly a historic and sacred moment in the life of our community. After so many years, 50 years, of prayers, sacrifices and dedication our beloved church has been consecrated for the glory of God.

Presvytera Penelope Dassouras marked the conclusion of the ritual by declaring, We did it! Archbishop Elpidophoros praised the demographic breadth of the parish during the service, describing the congregation as a vibrant, living community filled with men, women, seniors, youth, children, and babies inside a magnificent Byzantine structure.

Celebratory Banquet and Parish Leadership Remarks

Following the religious rites, parishioners gathered in the church hall for a celebratory banquet featuring performances by the Greek school and the Greek Pontiako youth dancers. Parish Council President John Aslanidis addressed the attendees, reflecting on the community’s past leadership and future trajectory. Our community has been blessed with great spiritual leadership from the past presiding priests to our current beloved Fr. Nicholas, Aslanidis said. We continue to flourish and grow. But this [consecration] is not the end. This is a new beginning, a new phase. A phase of growth, opportunity and flourishment.
