The Dallas Cowboys defense prepares to face Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride on Sunday as the unit works to improve its performance seven games into the season. McBride leads the NFL in receptions with 59, going for 472 yards and four touchdowns this year, presenting what may be the toughest assignment of the year for a Dallas defense that is still figuring themselves out and trying to improve across the board.

The good news for the defense is that they are getting healthier, which could help spark some change as a whole if their players are able to stay healthy throughout the rest of the year. Meanwhile, Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett has the most passing attempts in the NFL this year with 282, making it no secret where Arizona is trying to go with the football.

The Coverage Dilemma Against Trey McBride

McBride is far from a conventional tight end, as he can line up in-line, out wide, make contested catches, and pick up yards after the catch on screen passes. Conventionally, nickel cornerbacks cover tight ends, which would mean Caleb Downs is the primary matchup for Dallas. However, Downs has struggled at times in coverage, leaving the biggest question for the Cowboys: Who is going to cover him?

While there will still likely be matchups between McBride and Downs, outside cornerbacks like Cobie Durant or even Joey Porter Jr. could be matched up against the star tight end.

Offensive Focus for Dallas

Beyond the defensive challenges posed by Arizona’s passing game, the Cowboys must focus on staying balanced on offense and hitting explosive plays to secure a victory.
