Czech Post to Auction Off Remaining Postal Train Cars

Czech Post (Česká pošta) is continuing the sale of its railway cars, initiated last year, with an auction scheduled to start on March 2nd. The state-owned postal company will offer 72 cars – 29 of the Postw series and 43 of the Gbkkqs series – which were previously used for transporting postal shipments by rail.

Details of the Auction

The auction is being conducted through the Office for State Representation in Property Matters (ÚZSVM). Prospective buyers can inspect the vehicles at postal depots in Prague, Olomouc, and Ostrava. More information about the auction and the vehicles is available on the ÚZSVM website.

Vehicle Specifications and Pricing

The Postw series cars, manufactured by Vagónka Studénka in 1984-1985, have starting prices ranging from 800,000 to 900,000 Czech crowns. These cars, capable of speeds up to 160 km/h, feature two-axle chassis based on designs used for passenger cars. They were modified after 2000 to provide a large-capacity interior for freight transport.

The Gbkkqs series cars, produced by Českolipská vagónka in 1984-1985, have a maximum speed of 100 km/h and a starting price of around 220,000 Czech crowns. These are also two-axle cars.

Background

Czech Post owned a total of 89 railway cars after the discontinuation of postal trains in 2023. Some of these cars have already been sold in a previous wave of auctions. The remaining vehicles are now being offered for sale as they are no longer needed by the postal service.

Examples of repurposed postal cars can be found in operation with companies like GW Train Regio in Šumava, and rebuilt cars from Slovak Post are used seasonally to transport bicycles.
