Dark Matter Technologies Acquires House Numbers AI Platform to Automate Mortgage Production

“We’re AI-forward, and we’re disciplined about what we build and what we buy,” Dark Matter Technologies CEO Vikas Rao said as his company acquired the artificial intelligence platform and related intellectual property of House Numbers, nationalmortgageprofessional.com reported. The transaction brings the venture-backed technology company’s autonomous agents into the Empower loan origination ecosystem to handle loan conditions and communicate directly with borrowers.

The acquired platform has operated on live mortgage files for two years, processing loans for more than 100 lenders. House Numbers’ autonomous agents monitor loan files for changes, respond to outstanding conditions, make recommendations, and communicate through email, text, and voice. Unlike traditional AI assistants that only retrieve information, these agents execute tasks within the loan process under lender-defined permissions.

Integration Into The Empower Loan Origination System

The acquisition expands Dark Matter’s automation strategy following a series of product introductions throughout 2026. In March, the company introduced a managed AI agent framework using Model Context Protocol to securely access loan information. In August, it expanded Aiva Intelligence capabilities to provide immediate feedback on uploaded documents. In October, it integrated Mezzo’s verification orchestration technology to route verification orders.

The House Numbers technology extends that progression beyond document validation into complex loan-processing tasks. Rather than waiting for an employee to identify an outstanding condition or initiate a request, an AI agent monitors the file and performs permitted tasks as circumstances change. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The integration aims to reduce processing touches, shorten turnaround times, and free originators to generate business. Repeated document requests, unresolved conditions, and manual handoffs add time and expense throughout origination. An AI agent that identifies an issue and contacts the borrower eliminates several manual steps.

Leadership Roles And Compliance Controls In Regulated Lending

House Numbers co-founder and CEO Jeff Levinsohn joins Dark Matter as chief AI officer to oversee AI strategy and development. House Numbers co-founders Arthur Granado and Benjamin Hoffman join as vice president of engineering and vice president of AI adoption and enablement, respectively. Levinsohn noted that orchestrating complex agentic work safely inside a regulated process remains the primary challenge.

“The hard part of agentic AI is not getting a model to do a task once,” Levinsohn said. “It is orchestrating complex agentic work safely inside a regulated process and executing valuable tasks consistently at scale, with people in control of the decisions that matter.”

The platform includes compliance controls designed for regulated environments, including data access restrictions and permission settings comparable to human users. A compliance blocklist restricts prohibited actions, confidence-based controls determine when additional review is necessary, and audit trails record activities performed by both employees and AI agents.
