DART Expansion to Kilcock: New Depot and Enhanced Rail Services for Kildare Commuters
Irish Rail has confirmed the extension of DART services to Kilcock Station in County Kildare, marking a significant upgrade to rail infrastructure and connectivity for the region. The expansion is coupled with the announcement of a new DART+ Depot located west of Kilcock, set to service and house a fleet of up to 750 new DART carriages. This development promises more frequent trains, increased capacity, and a more sustainable transport network.
Transformation of Rail Services to Kilcock
Currently, Kilcock Station is served by nine trains each way daily, with hourly service during peak times. The DART+ Programme aims to transform this, delivering infrastructure capable of supporting DARTs running up to every 10 minutes in both directions during peak periods . Intercity services will continue to operate at Kilcock Station, providing a comprehensive rail network for commuters and travelers.
Upgrades to Kilcock Station
The expansion includes significant upgrades to Kilcock Station itself. These improvements will include:
- A second track between Maynooth and Kilcock
- A new platform
- A fully accessible pedestrian access bridge with lifts
New DART+ Depot and Job Creation
The new DART+ Depot, located west of Kilcock, will be a central hub for maintaining and housing the growing DART fleet. The facility is expected to create over 100 new positions for skilled maintenance staff . The depot will accommodate up to 750 new DART carriages, with the first units currently undergoing testing and safety approvals, anticipated to enter service in 2027 .
Electrification and Sustainability
A key component of the DART+ Programme is the full electrification of the rail network to Kilcock and beyond, to the new Depot. This electrification will contribute to a more sustainable transport system, reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmentally friendly travel options.
Public Consultation
Iarnród Éireann has launched a public consultation regarding the updated location of the new DART+ Depot . This consultation allows for community input and ensures the project aligns with local needs and concerns.
Previous Depot Plans
The current Depot location west of Kilcock was selected after an extensive search. A previous plan for a depot near Maynooth was not included in the Railway Order approval from An Coimisiún Pleanála. Over 18 months, fifty potential sites adjacent to the railway line across the Greater Dublin Area were examined before the Kilcock site was chosen .
