Americans Owe $1.26 Trillion
Americans have amassed $1.26 trillion in credit card debt, according to Federal Reserve data reported by Moneywise.
That sum came to light during a call on personal finance personality Dave Ramsey’s show, Moneywise reported, when a caller named Katie asked whether she could simply stop paying her bills.
“If I can’t afford my credit card payments, what do I do?” the caller asked, according to Moneywise. “Like, do I just not pay them?”
Ramsey advises downloading budgeting apps and discarding credit cards
In response to the caller’s financial strain, Ramsey offered two immediate directives, Moneywise reported. He told her to download a budgeting app to map out every incoming dollar and to discard her credit cards completely.
Ramsey’s firm, Ramsey Solutions, maintains a strict stance against revolving debt and advises clients to avoid plastic entirely.
Emergency Cash Shortfalls
Only 63% of U.S. adults report having enough cash on hand to cover a $400 emergency, as detailed in Federal Reserve statistics. For the remaining population, unexpected expenses typically go straight onto a credit card.
To break this cycle, Ramsey instructed the caller to prioritize essentials. His approach relies on covering food, shelter, clothing, transportation, and utilities first through strict monthly tracking.
