Delaware Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Major Blizzard
SMYRNA, Del. – February 22, 2026 – Governor Matthew Meyer has declared a State of Emergency for Delaware, effective as of noon today, in anticipation of a significant winter storm. The declaration activates statewide resources, including the Delaware National Guard, to prepare for and respond to the impending blizzard.
State of Emergency Details
The State of Emergency allows state agencies to mobilize and respond effectively to the storm. Governor Meyer emphasized the need for preparedness and caution, particularly regarding the increased risk of coastal flooding. “I’m declaring a State of Emergency and activating every available state resource to ensure Delawareans are protected as this blizzard blankets our communities, including increased risks for coastal flooding,” Meyer stated in a press release.
Residents are urged to prepare now and to stay off the roads once the storm begins. Governor Meyer also encouraged neighbors to seem out for one another during the severe weather event.
Coordination of Emergency Response
The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) has been operating at an Enhanced Watch level since Saturday and will move to full activation at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday. DEMA is coordinating response efforts with a range of partners, including:

Blizzard Warning and Potential Impacts
The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for all of Delaware, extending from Sunday through Monday. Forecasters predict snowfall totals of 12 to 20 inches statewide, potentially making this a historic winter storm. Widespread closures and infrastructure impacts are likely.
State officials are preparing for potential state-mandated driving restrictions to ensure the safety of motorists and emergency responders. Delaware utilizes a three-tier driving warning system, with Level 1 urging motorists to avoid travel unless necessary and exercise extreme caution.
