Desirée García Named Massachusetts Teacher of the Year
Desirée García, a kindergarten teacher at German Gerena Community School in Springfield, Massachusetts, was named the 2027 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year during a surprise school assembly on Thursday. Maura Healey announced the award, selecting García from 347 nominations submitted from across the state.
Dual-Language Teaching and Professional Background
García teaches in the school’s Spanish-English bilingual program alongside her colleague Sol Ivette Santiago. She has eleven years of teaching experience, with four of those years dedicated specifically to bilingual education programs.
Springfield Public Schools officials noted that García is the third educator from the district to receive the state-level distinction.
“The bilingualism is a valuable resource; I’ve seen students thrive when their language, their culture, and their identity are valued in the classroom,” García said.
State Leadership Recognition
Governor Healey, First Lady Joanna Lydgate, Steve Zrike, and Elementary and Secondary Pedro Martinez attended the assembly to surprise García.
“Great teachers can change a child’s life, and Desirée García does it every day in her kindergarten classroom,” Governor Healey said in a press release. “She helps her students discover the joy of learning, to gain confidence in themselves, and to feel proud of speaking two languages.”
Selection Process and Timeline
The selection process for the 2027 award began with community nominations in early 2026. A review committee narrowed the field to seven semifinalists, followed by interviews of four finalists conducted by a panel of previous winners. Commissioner Martinez made the final selection based on the panel’s recommendation.
