A 57-year-old man from Helmond has been arrested in connection with the 1994 rape of a 15-year-old deaf and partially sighted girl.
The 1994 Abduction in Schijndel
The victim was waiting with several other children near a riding school for transport back to a local deaf institute on May 30, 1994.
The girl regularly took riding lessons at Manege Het Seepaard in Schijndel.
An unknown man pulled her into a car, drove her to a nearby wooded area in Middelrode, and raped her before dropping her off near her residential area.
Hurdles in the Original Investigation
Initial police efforts in 1994 faced significant hurdles because the victim’s sensory impairments made it difficult to provide a detailed description of the perpetrator.
Cold Case Team Utilizes Modern DNA Techniques
The cold case team tracked down the suspect 32 years later using a DNA match.

The team recently reviewed the paper files and asked the NFI to re-examine the preserved trace evidence using modern techniques.
This secondary analysis yielded a DNA match with the 57-year-old Helmond resident.
His profile was already stored in the national DNA database due to a previous criminal offense, though police have not disclosed the nature of that prior offense due to the ongoing investigation.
Magistrate Orders Extended Custody
The suspect was brought before the examining magistrate, who ordered him held in custody for an additional 14 days.
Public Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Mark van der Wel stated that the investigation remains fully active and declined to share further details out of consideration for the privacy of the victim.
Authorities have also not disclosed the victim’s reaction to the arrest.
Alongside the forensic breakthrough, detectives have re-interviewed multiple witnesses from the original timeline as part of the broader inquiry into the 32-year-old assault.
