Domenicali Confident Verstappen Will Remain with F1 Despite Novel Car Concerns

Stefano Domenicali, President of Formula 1, has expressed confidence that Max Verstappen will not leave the sport despite the four-time world champion voicing concerns over the new regulations for the 2026 season. Verstappen recently likened the new cars, designed to be more sustainable, to “Formula E on steroids,” and previously stated he would not continue in F1 if he didn’t find the new cars enjoyable to drive.

Verstappen’s Concerns and Domenicali’s Response

During pre-season testing, Verstappen highlighted the increased emphasis on energy management in the new cars as detracting from the core racing experience. He feels the demand to constantly harvest electric energy, even during qualifying laps, goes against the spirit of Formula 1. Though, following a meeting with Verstappen in Bahrain on Wednesday, Domenicali is optimistic about the Red Bull driver’s continued commitment.

“I met with Max,” Domenicali stated. “We grasp Max will be part of the future of Formula 1. It is very important we listen to him, as we do with all of the top drivers. He has a way of saying something that can be interpreted in a certain way. But I can guarantee to you that Max wants and does care about Formula 1 more than anyone else.”

Constructive Dialogue and Future Adjustments

Domenicali emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue with Verstappen and other drivers to address their concerns. He plans to hold further meetings with the FIA and teams to discuss potential adjustments that maintain the driving experience at the heart of the sport.

“The evolution behind the technology of the car requires a different way of driving the cars. That has happened in the past, and it will happen in the future, too,” Domenicali explained. “I am pretty sure when we sit down in the middle of the year, or the finish of the year, you will see different comments. This is normal in Formula 1.”

Verstappen’s Track Record and Future Speculation

Having secured four consecutive drivers’ titles from 2021-2024, Verstappen has cemented his position as the leading driver on the grid. His future has been a subject of speculation, with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff previously attempting to recruit the Dutchman. Domenicali attributes his confidence in Verstappen’s continued participation to their strong relationship.

“Because I have a very good relationship with Max. I know him very, very well. I spend a lot of time with him. That is the reason, full stop. And he loves Formula 1, there’s no doubt about it,” Domenicali added.

Addressing Concerns About the New Regulations

The significant regulatory changes for 2026, encompassing both new power units and chassis designs, have raised questions about the potential impact on racing quality. However, Domenicali dismissed the concerns as premature.

“I don’t understand the panic that is going around,” he said. “There will be incredible racing, a lot of action and that is the most important thing. We need to stay calm because as always when there are new regulations – as there was in 2014, 2017 and 2021 – there is a doubt that everything is wrong. I am not worried at all.”
