Dr. Blagomir Zdravkov Appointed Manager of Burgas Children’s Hospital
Dr. Blagomir Zdravkov has been selected as the new manager of the Children’s Hospital in Burgas, Bulgaria, following a competitive three-stage selection process. He will present his management program to the Burgas Municipal Council on March 17th.1
Competitive Selection Process
Dr. Zdravkov achieved the highest overall score of 5.88 in the competition.1 He was competing against Dr. Toma Tomov, who scored 5.63, Dr. Ventsislav Dimov with a score of 5.19, and Dimitar Pomakov, who received 5.02.1
The competition was overseen by a commission selected by the Burgas Municipal Council. The final stage, held on March 10th, involved interviews with the four candidates.1 The commission was chaired by municipal councilor Dr. Lidia Stefanova, with Zlatina Georgieva serving as secretary and Dr. Georgi Pazderov, Dr. Zheni Stoichkova, and Prof. Dr. Tsvetomir Lukanov as members.1 Prof. Lukanov participated remotely from Heidelberg University Hospital in Germany.
Candidates were evaluated on their proposed three-year management programs for the hospital and their performance during the interviews.1 The commission as well presented candidates with case studies related to managing the Children’s Hospital in Burgas. A key discussion point was the challenge of attracting and retaining medical specialists.
Zdravkov’s Vision for the Hospital
Dr. Zdravkov, who is currently the director of the Specialized Hospital for Children’s Diseases “Prof. Iv. Mitev,” described the project as a significant investment in healthcare infrastructure.1 He emphasized his commitment to collaboration and communication.
Dr. Tomov, also a candidate, stated his belief that the heart of a hospital lies in its people.1
Previous Roles and Recognition
Dr. Zdravkov was previously considered for the position of Minister of Health in December 2022 as part of a proposed cabinet.2 He has served as the executive director of the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Children’s Diseases “Prof. Ivan Mitev”.3
In May 2025, Dr. Zdravkov participated in a U.S.-Bulgarian partnership program focused on strengthening pediatric care in Bulgaria, representing the “Prof. Ivan Mitev” Specialized Hospital.3
