Drug Dealer Jailed for ‘Home Alone’-Inspired Booby Traps

A British drug dealer has been sentenced to seven years in prison after rigging his properties with booby traps inspired by the Christmas film Home Alone, in an attempt to protect a large-scale drug operation. The case highlights the increasingly elaborate measures taken by criminals and the disruption caused to local communities.

Grimethorpe Residence Fortified with Traps

Ian Claughton, 60, “heavily fortified” three properties in the South Yorkshire village of Grimethorpe with a series of homemade devices, including fishing wire tripwires, adapted crow-scarers, and rudimentary pipe bombs [1]. The aim was to deter potential intruders and safeguard a cannabis growing operation.

Evacuation and Discovery

Approximately 100 homes were evacuated in May 2024 when police searched the properties connected to Claughton and his ex-wife [2]. During the search, officers discovered a network of traps designed to impede and potentially harm anyone attempting to enter. A fishing wire stretched across a room at knee height, connected to an electrical connector and battery pack, was among the devices found [2].

‘Home Alone’ Inspiration Acknowledged

Prosecutor Helen Chapman told the court, “If you are sitting and thinking that this sounds a bit like the film ‘Home Alone’, then you are right. In fact, that is precisely what Ian Claughton said he was trying to do” [2]. A sign found in one of the houses warned intruders: “Congratulations. Well done for getting this far.
