Glo Hurling Donates €1,000 to Breast Cancer Ireland from Pink Sliotar Sales

Glo Hurling founder Cathal Sweeney presented a €1,000 cheque to Breast Cancer Ireland on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after raising the funds through sales of a pink glow-in-the-dark hurling ball. Sweeney, who launched Ireland’s first glow-in-the-dark hurling ball as a transition-year student, donated €1 from each pink sliotar sold, I Love Limerick reported. Olena Oleksienko captured photographs of Cathal Sweeney alongside Juliette O’Connell, Outreach Coordinator with Breast Cancer Ireland, during the presentation of the funds raised through the pink glow-in-the-dark sliotar.

Sweeney said a school talk in Mungret motivated him to support the charity. “I chose Breast Cancer Ireland because there was a talk in my school in Mungret, and I was really shocked by the statistics and the amount of people that are affected,” he told I Love Limerick. “And they do so much good work across Ireland, so it was kind of a no-brainer for me.”

Juliette O’Connell Praises Youth Fundraising Effort

Juliette O’Connell, Outreach Coordinator with Breast Cancer Ireland and a survivor herself, described the fundraising effort as “absolutely phenomenal.” Speaking alongside Sweeney, O’Connell noted the broad impact of the disease. “I’m honoured and delighted, Cathal, to meet you eventually because I’ve seen you all over socials with this Sliotar, and you’re absolutely amazing,” she said. “There’s no family that isn’t affected by breast cancer. As a survivor myself and working on the education awareness programme, this money that you raised for us the last number of months, we really, really appreciate your support.”

Founded in 2012 and led by CEO Aisling Hurley, Breast Cancer Ireland focuses on accelerating research, improving patient outcomes, and helping build a future free from breast cancer. The organization unites researchers, clinicians, patients, fundraisers and communities nationwide.
