James Webb Telescope Reveals Surprisingly Mature Barred Spiral Galaxy from Early Universe

Astronomers have identified a strong candidate for one of the earliest known barred spiral galaxies – a striking cosmic structure that began to form just 2 billion years after the Big Bang. The galaxy, designated COSMOS-74706, dates back approximately 11.5 billion years and exhibits a stellar bar, a prominent band of stars and gas stretching across its center, similar to the structure found in our own Milky Way galaxy.

Research led by Daniel Ivanov, a physics and astronomy graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh’s Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, uncovered this distant galaxy. The findings were initially presented at the 247th meeting of the American Astronomical Society on January 8, 2026 . The research builds upon work begun during Ivanov’s undergraduate studies at UMass Amherst, under the guidance of Professor of Astronomy Mauro Giavalisco, and includes contributions from Yingjie Cheng and John Weaver, both former UMass Amherst researchers .

What Is a Stellar Bar?

A stellar bar is a linear feature at the center of a spiral galaxy, composed of a dense collection of stars and gas. When viewed from above or below the galactic disk, this alignment appears as a bright line bisecting the galaxy . These bars aren’t static; they are dynamic waves of denser material that form due to instabilities within the galaxy itself .

Why This Discovery Matters

Stellar bars play a crucial role in a galaxy’s evolution. They channel gas from the outer regions inward, fueling the supermassive black hole at the galaxy’s core and potentially influencing star formation rates . The discovery of COSMOS-74706 is significant because it pushes back the timeline for when these structures are known to have formed.

“This galaxy was developing bars 2 billion years after the birth of the universe,” Ivanov explained. “Two billion years after the Big Bang.”

Confirmation and Methodology

While previous studies have suggested the existence of barred spiral galaxies from similar early epochs, COSMOS-74706 stands out due to the precision of its confirmation. The team utilized spectroscopy, a method providing more reliable distance data, to verify the galaxy’s redshift. Unlike some earlier candidates, the light from COSMOS-74706 wasn’t distorted by gravitational lensing, ensuring a clearer observation .

Ivanov noted that the discovery isn’t entirely surprising, as computer simulations have predicted the potential for stellar bar formation as early as redshift 5 (roughly 12.5 billion years ago). However, he emphasized that such objects are not expected to be common at that stage of cosmic history .
