Epic Games Store Launches in Japan on iPhone Following Regulatory Changes
The Epic Games Store is now available on iPhones in Japan, marking a significant expansion for the platform and a win for competition in the mobile app market. This launch follows the enactment of Japan’s Mobile Software Competition Act (MSCA) in December 2025, which aims to foster a more open digital ecosystem.
The Impact of the Mobile Software Competition Act
The MSCA, similar to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), mandates support for alternative app stores and payment options. This legislation directly enabled Epic Games to bring its store to iOS devices in Japan. Prior to the MSCA, Apple’s policies presented challenges to alternative app stores.
Apple’s Policies and Concerns Raised by Epic Games
Epic Games highlighted concerns regarding Apple’s practices, specifically a 5% Core Technology Commission fee imposed on apps from third-party stores and requirements for developers to track and report transactions. According to Epic, “This creates confusion and costs that deter developers from launching on competing app stores.” the initial launch focuses on Epic’s own titles, including Fortnite and Rocket League Sideswipe.
Epic Games also pointed to the complexity of Apple’s installation process for its App Store in Japan, noting a nine-step process that creates barriers to competition. The company referenced a previous reduction from a 15-step process in Europe, following regulatory pressure, which resulted in a 60% decrease in player drop-off during installation.
Expanding Mobile Gaming Options for Japanese Users
The arrival of the Epic Games Store on iOS in Japan provides users with a dedicated third-party marketplace to access Epic’s library of games. This move represents a significant shift towards a more open mobile gaming environment in the region.
Broader Context: Global Expansion and Legal Battles
The launch in Japan builds upon Epic’s previous expansions, including the iOS launch in the European Union in May 2025 following the implementation of the DMA. The Epic Games Store also relaunched in the US after a court ruling allowed Epic to avoid fees on app purchases made outside of Apple’s App Store.
The legal dispute between Epic and Apple began in 2020, when Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store for allegedly bypassing platform fees.
