Europol and Bulgaria Bust Migrant Smuggling Network

Sofia,Bulgaria – January 30,2026 – A large-scale operation coordinated between Bulgarian law enforcement and Europol has resulted in the dismantling of a important migrant smuggling network. The operation, conducted by the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP), led too the detention of 16 individuals across Sofia, Breznik, and Targovishte.

Authorities have formally accused seven individuals of participating in a criminal group dedicated to facilitating the illegal movement of migrants. The inquiry suggests a refined operation involving the organized channeling of individuals across borders.

The GDBOP initiated the special operation based on intelligence gathered in collaboration with Europol, highlighting the increasing importance of international cooperation in combating transnational crime. Details regarding the nationalities of the migrants involved and the network’s operational routes have not yet been fully disclosed, pending further investigation.

“This successful operation demonstrates the commitment of Bulgarian authorities to tackling migrant smuggling and protecting our borders,” stated a GDBOP spokesperson. “We will continue to work closely with Europol and other international partners to disrupt these criminal networks and bring those responsible to justice.”

The investigation is ongoing,and authorities anticipate further arrests and the uncovering of additional evidence related to the smuggling operation. The focus remains on identifying all individuals involved in the network, from organizers to facilitators, and dismantling their infrastructure.
