ExxonMobil and Chevron Report Third-Quarter Profits Amid Global Energy Disruptions

ExxonMobil and Chevron reported third-quarter profits that more than doubled, driven by oil prices remaining sharply elevated because of the U.S. war with Iran, NBC News reported. ExxonMobil announced a profit of $15.4 billion for the quarter, up 104.2% from the same period a year earlier, according to financial results covered by Business Wire. Chevron posted adjusted earnings of $10.4 billion, surging 186% from the previous year, as Brent crude sustained prices near $118 per barrel.

Production Milestones and Refining Performance at ExxonMobil

ExxonMobil generated $25.7 billion in cash flow from operating activities and $19.1 billion in free cash flow during the quarter. Chairman and CEO Darren Woods stated that the company utilized unmatched scale, integration, and technical capabilities to meet global energy needs. Operations reached significant upstream production milestones, including 1 billion cumulative barrels at both Guyana and the Kearl project, alongside 100 million tons at PNG LNG, according to company statements. The company also assumed operatorship at Papua LNG and reached agreements to increase working interests in liquefied natural gas projects in Papua and Mozambique.

Refining operations achieved record year-to-date refining operational performance, including highest global fuels utilization excluding Middle East impacts, highest global diesel yield, and highest North American diesel volumes. Energy Products contributed roughly $4.5 billion in added earnings, offsetting a $1.3 billion upstream drag from lower average Brent prices and estimated derivative timing effects, as analyzed by 24/7 Wall St.

Global Supply Disruptions Drive Diesel and Gasoline Surges

The blockbuster financial returns coincided with severe disruptions across international shipping routes and refining infrastructure. Darren Woods told CNBC that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz forced shipping to find alternative routes, while Ukrainian military strikes against Russian energy infrastructure have taken out approximately half of Russia’s refining capacity.

For consumers, the national average for regular gasoline hit $4.12 a gallon during the third quarter, representing a 40% increase since the conflict with Iran began, according to AAA data cited by CNN. Moody’s Analytics estimated that U.S. households have paid an average of $1,184 more since the start of the war due to elevated gasoline, diesel, and heating oil costs.

Political Repercussions and Shareholder Distributions

The high energy prices have intensified political pressure ahead of midterm elections, as voters rank inflation and energy costs as primary concerns. President Donald Trump defended the oil industry’s financial performance during recent rallies, celebrating that the country is making hundreds of billions of dollars because of events in the Middle East. “Our country is making hundreds of billions of dollars because of what’s happened in the Middle East,” Trump said during an October event in Georgia. A White House official told CNN that unleashing American energy dominance has strengthened national security and increased national wealth.

Amid the market volatility, ExxonMobil distributed $9.4 billion to shareholders in the third quarter, encompassing $4.3 billion in dividends and $5.1 billion in share repurchases. The company reached 44 consecutive years of increases in annual dividends per share and announced 2027 share repurchases of $20 billion, according to business filings.
