Family Commissions Independent Autopsy for Nolan Wells
The family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells has commissioned an independent autopsy to determine the cause of the student-athlete’s death. Wells went missing during a Fourth of July outing on Horn Island, sparking a search that ended in tragedy. While investigators have found no evidence of foul play, the family is seeking further clarity through a private examination of the teen’s remains.
A Disappearance on the Gulf Coast
Wells was a student-athlete at Southwest Mississippi Community College and a former football standout at Ocean Springs High School. He disappeared on July 4 during a trip to Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Authorities report that Wells was last seen by his companions around 3 p.m. before the group returned to the mainland without him. His mother reported him missing later that evening, triggering an extensive search involving local, state, and federal agencies.
On July 6, a National Park Service ranger discovered Wells’ body in the water near the northwest end of the island. Officials confirmed his identity using dental records, as reported by the Clarion Ledger.
Questions Over Witness Accounts and Digital Evidence
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the Wells family, announced that an independent autopsy will be conducted in Washington, D.C. Crump stated that the family remains concerned about the circumstances surrounding the teen’s final hours. During an interview with ABC News, Crump noted that the family has questions regarding conflicting witness accounts about whether Wells intended to stay on the island or return to the boat. Furthermore, the family has identified deleted messages on Wells’ cellphone, though investigators have not publicly linked these digital findings to any criminal activity.
“The family is concerned about that,” Crump told ABC News. “We’re going to have an independent autopsy. We have investigators talking to witnesses that have no alignment or no allegiance to the state, and that’s important.”
The Search for Answers Continues
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department continues to lead the official investigation. While officials have stated that drowning is the suspected cause of death, they emphasize that a final determination remains pending based on the state medical examiner’s autopsy and toxicology reports.
Authorities have issued a public appeal for anyone who was present on Horn Island on July 4 to provide photos, videos, or firsthand accounts. Investigators maintain that even minor details from bystanders could be essential in establishing an accurate timeline of the events that led to the teen’s death. While results from the independent autopsy are expected shortly, official toxicology testing from the state may take several weeks to finalize.
