Rise of Far-Right ‘Defend’ Groups in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is witnessing a rapid expansion of far-right groups identifying as “Defend,” increasingly visible at protests against asylum seeker centers. These groups have grown significantly since a large anti-immigration protest in The Hague on September 20, 2025, which escalated into riots.

Growth and Activity

Since the September 20th protests, at least 35 new Defend groups have become active across the country, according to research conducted by KRO-NCRV’s Pointer and the Justice for Prosperity Foundation. Prior to the Malieveld riots, only two such groups were known to exist. These groups have been present at 21 of the 29 anti-asylum seeker center and anti-immigration demonstrations held since then.

Tactics and Influence

Members of Defend groups are actively attempting to influence local decision-making regarding asylum seeker centers. Research suggests a deliberate strategy to focus on local protests, believing that a visible presence at municipal buildings can have a greater impact than larger demonstrations in less populated areas. A recorded statement from a group member highlights this tactic, stating that a small, vocal protest at a local town hall can be more effective in preventing the establishment of an asylum center than a larger protest in a more open space.

Identification and Communication

Defend group members often identify themselves through clothing bearing names like “Defend Den Haag” or “Defend Staphorst.” They actively communicate via a national Telegram channel, which has grown to over 3,000 users, where racist and antisemitic content is frequently shared.

Concerns and Monitoring

Although Defend groups publicly distance themselves from the label of “far-right,” members have been observed sharing extremist and Nazi-related symbols. The AIVD (General Intelligence and Security Service) is closely monitoring these groups. The rise in these groups coincides with the implementation of the distribution law on February 1, 2024, which mandates that municipalities accommodate asylum seekers, leading to a shift from national protests to localized demonstrations.

Defend Staphorst

Staphorst is one municipality where a Defend group has been established.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
