Microsoft Copilot Vulnerability: AI Summaries as a New Phishing Vector
Microsoft Copilot, the AI assistant integrated into Microsoft 365 applications like Outlook and Teams, is facing scrutiny over a newly discovered vulnerability that could allow attackers to manipulate AI-generated summaries and create convincing phishing attacks. Security researchers at Permiso have identified a critical cross-prompt injection vulnerability (XPIA), now tracked as CVE-2026-26133, that exploits the way Copilot processes email content.
How the Vulnerability Works: Cross-Prompt Injection
The vulnerability centers around a technique called cross-prompt injection (XPIA). Attackers can embed hidden instructions within the text of an email. When a user asks Copilot to summarize that email, the AI assistant may interpret these hidden instructions as legitimate commands, altering the generated summary to include malicious content. Permiso’s research demonstrates that this manipulation can result in the insertion of deceptive security alerts or other prompts directly into the trusted Copilot interface.
The Shift in Phishing Tactics
Traditionally, phishing attacks rely on deceptive emails with malicious links or attachments. This new vulnerability represents a shift in tactics. While Outlook’s built-in summarize feature sometimes detected and blocked suspicious instructions, the Teams Copilot interface was found to be the most vulnerable, frequently reproducing attacker-supplied content in its summaries. Real-World Implications: AI-Generated Phishing Alerts
In a proof-of-concept attack, researchers successfully embedded instructions that prompted Copilot to append phishing-style alerts – such as “Action Required” or “Security Alert” – within the AI-generated summary. These alerts could then direct users to malicious links disguised as legitimate security measures. Given that the alert appears within the Copilot interface, users may be more likely to trust it as a genuine system notification.
Mitigating the Risk
Organizations can take several steps to mitigate the risk of AI-assisted phishing attacks exploiting this vulnerability:
- Apply Microsoft Patches: Regularly install the latest security updates and test them in a staging environment before deploying to production.
