Flamengo Exits Olympic Canoeing and Paracanoeing Programs

In a strategic shift, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo has announced its withdrawal from both canoeing and paracanoeing programs, effective immediately. This decision, while acknowledging the achievements of its athletes, stems from a restructuring aimed at optimizing resources and focusing on sustainable development within its Olympic sports initiatives.

Strategic realignment and Athlete Dispersion

Flamengo’s decision is rooted in the logistical challenges presented by the current geographical distribution of its top canoeing athletes. According to a club statement, key athletes including Isaquias Queiroz, Gabriel Assunção, Mateus dos Santos, and Valdenice do Nascimento are no longer based in Rio de Janeiro for training . This dispersion hinders the club’s ability to maintain a consistent, structured training habitat crucial for developing new talent – a cornerstone of Flamengo’s sporting philosophy.

Recognizing Athlete Contributions

The club expressed deep gratitude for the dedication and accomplishments of its canoeing athletes. Isaquias Queiroz, a five-time Olympic medalist and a prominent figure in Brazilian canoeing, spent approximately seven years with Flamengo, leaving behind a critically important legacy . Flamengo also extended its thanks to Gabriel Assunção, Mateus dos Santos, Valdenice do Nascimento, and Roberto Maehler for their professionalism and contributions.

Paracanoeing Program Concluded

Alongside the canoeing program, Flamengo is also ceasing its participation in paracanoeing. The club recognized the dedication of athletes Michel Pessanha, Gessyca Guerra, Diana Barcellos, and Valdenir Junior, acknowledging their contributions to the club’s history in parasports .

Canoeing in the Olympics

Canoeing has been a consistent part of the summer Olympic Games as 1936, with exhibition events occurring even earlier in 1924 . The sport encompasses two primary disciplines: slalom and sprint, utilizing both canoes (one or two paddlers) and kayaks (one, two, or four paddlers).

Recent Successes and Future Outlook

Despite this strategic shift, Flamengo recently celebrated a victory with its rowing team, winning the State Rowing championship undefeated in November 2025, marking the club’s 56th state championship title and tenth consecutive regatta win . The club remains committed to fostering Olympic sports, but will now concentrate its efforts on programs where it can maintain a centralized training structure and effectively nurture emerging talent.
