Flames Edge Blues in Shootout After Three Goals Disallowed
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Joel Farabee and rookie Matvei Gridin scored in a shootout to give the Calgary Flames a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday night. The game was marked by an unusual occurrence: three Flames goals were waived off after challenges by the Blues.
Game Summary
Connor Zary scored early in the first period for Calgary, and Devin Cooley stopped 26 shots. Dylan Holloway tied it for St. Louis early in the second period. Joel Hofer made 31 saves for the Blues.
Controversial Goals
The Flames had three goals disallowed due to challenges from St. Louis coach Jim Montgomery and his video coach. The first came at 12:39 of the first period when a Martin Pospisil goal was overturned after review showed the puck had drifted inches outside the offensive zone. Zary’s goal was later disallowed with 2:38 left in the first period due to a high-sticking infraction. Midway through the second period, a Joel Farabee goal was called back for offside.
Shootout Decides the Game
After Farabee scored in the second round of the shootout to give Calgary a 1-0 lead, coach Ryan Huska turned to Gridin. Gridin won the game with a shot over Hofer’s glove. Gridin reportedly asked Huska for the opportunity to capture the final shot.
Unusual Circumstances
This was the first time since March 2023 that an NHL team had three goals erased in a single game, matching a feat previously achieved by the Edmonton Oilers according to Fox Sports.
Team Records
Calgary improved to 27-34-7 with the win, whereas St. Louis fell to 27-30-11.
Upcoming Games
The Blues will play at Vancouver on Saturday night. The Flames will host Florida on Friday night.
