Flávio Bolsonaro Arrives in Florida After Fleeing Brazil
Flávio Bolsonaro arrived in the United States by private jet on Wednesday, following his defeat in Brazil’s presidential runoff election. The 45-year-old senator landed at Opa-Locka Executive Airport near Miami accompanied by his wife and daughters, after a clandestine journey that included stops in Argentina and Ecuador. The departure follows the victory of leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who won a runoff election on Sunday.
Disputed Claims of Leadership and Electoral Fraud
Upon his arrival in Florida, Flávio Bolsonaro posted a statement on his X account declaring himself his country’s rightful leader. “I am the elected president, and the criminals who stole Brazil’s election are part of a criminal organisation that has established a tyranny,” he stated, while alleging electoral fraud. In a subsequent post, he revised his title from president to leader and announced plans to direct the opposition from the United States. In a written letter, he denied fleeing the country to escape justice, asserting that he left to protect himself and his family from a political witch hunt he accused Lula and the Brazilian Supreme Court of carrying out.

Reaction from his political allies remained divided. Rogerio Marinho, leader of Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party in the Senate, expressed solidarity with the senator, describing him as a political exile. However, Marinho distanced himself from the fraud allegations, telling reporters in Brasília that the party could not support claims lacking evidence. Meanwhile, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned the departure during his 81st birthday celebration in Brasília, calling it a shameful act and stating that individuals who sneak out of the country usually have something to hide.
Ongoing Corruption Investigations and Flight Risk Concerns
Flávio Bolsonaro faces multiple investigations in Brazil involving alleged corruption, money laundering, and the illegal movement of currency. Federal police had asked the Supreme Federal Court to authorize the seizure of his passports after identifying a risk of him leaving the country, noting that a person under investigation in the same case, lawyer Willer Tomaz, was already in Florida. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes subsequently issued an order requiring the senator to surrender his travel documents within 24 hours.

Despite the order and the cancellation of his Brazilian and diplomatic passports, Bolsonaro departed the country before his parliamentary immunity expired. Documentation reviewed by Agence France-Presse indicates that the senator also holds Italian nationality, which may have facilitated his transit through neighboring countries. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed that members of the Bolsonaro family were inspected and cleared in accordance with applicable immigration laws.
International Reactions and US Political Ties
Donald Trump reiterated his stance that Brazil’s election was very strange, maintaining longstanding political ties with Flávio Bolsonaro and his father, Jair Bolsonaro. The elder Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest and was previously sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup to overturn his own 2022 election defeat to Lula. Despite these ties, Trump told reporters that he would not get involved in Flávio Bolsonaro’s claim to the presidency.
In neighboring Argentina, opposition lawmakers pressed the government for answers regarding how Bolsonaro managed to transit through the country. Argentinian authorities maintained that he traveled with valid documentation, though officials requested a formal parliamentary briefing from Chief of Cabinet Diego Santilli.
