Wangjiangjing Town is experiencing a surge in football enthusiasm, transforming from a region with limited sporting infrastructure to a hub for both amateur and league-level matches. This growth isn’t just about the game itself; it’s a deliberate effort to integrate football into the fabric of childhood development and community life.

From Wasteland to Modern Football Park

The Grand Canal Sports Culture Park stands as a testament to this transformation. What was once an underutilized space has been developed into a modern football complex, hosting 13 large-scale football matches and accommodating reservations from over 30 teams. The park now features six 11-a-side football fields, including four natural lawns, one mixed lawn, and one artificial lawn. Notably, one artificial turf and one mixed turf have achieved FIFA certification, qualifying the venue to host national-level events.

Early Childhood Development Through Football

The initiative extends beyond competitive play, deeply embedding itself in the local education system. Wenchuan Primary School has championed football since 2016, with an annual “Principal’s Cup” league fostering a love for the sport among students. The school’s football team achieved success in the Xiuzhou District “District Chief’s Cup” football competition in September 2024, winning first prize in the five primary school groups. Professional coaching, provided by the Wangjiangjing Town Football Association, has further elevated the quality of training.

Even at the kindergarten level, football is a priority. Wangjiangjing Town Central Kindergarten has consistently embraced the philosophy of “happy football, healthy growth” since participating in the first Children’s Fun Sports Football Competition in 2013. A dedicated team of three coaches works with over 40 children, providing regular skills training and competitive opportunities. The kindergarten has earned recognition as a National Youth Campus Football Characteristic Kindergarten, with accolades including first prize in the Jiaxing City’s Second Children’s Campus Football League and the Eighth Jiaxing Citizens’ Games.

Wenchuan Primary School organizes opportunities for students to watch and learn about the World Cup, promoting sportsmanship and appreciation for the game. The campus league fosters teamwork and perseverance, although parents actively participate in supporting the young athletes. As Ni Jianguo, vice principal of Wenchuan Primary School, stated, “Football is not just a competition, it is a process for every child to participate, grow and be seen.”

The Grand Canal Sports and Culture Park has also entered into a cooperative agreement with Wenchuan Primary School, providing the school team with access to professional-level training and competition facilities.
