The community of Ballina, County Mayo, is mourning the loss of Francis Rutledge, a dedicated postmaster and valued resident who passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, at St. Augustine’s Home. He was 95 years old.
A Life of Service to the Community
For many years, Francis Rutledge served the Newtown Cloghans and Knockmore communities as postmaster. He was known for his kindness, helpfulness, and unwavering loyalty, becoming a trusted figure for countless residents. His role extended beyond simply delivering mail. he was a vital connection point within the community.
Final Respects and Funeral Arrangements
Mr. Rutledge’s remains reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina (F26 V274) on Monday evening, March 2nd, from 5pm until 6pm. A removal took place to St. Teresa’s Church, Rathduff, on Tuesday morning, March 3rd, for his 11:00 AM Requiem Mass. McGowan’s Funeral Directors handled the arrangements.
Family and Legacy
Francis was predeceased by his wife, Claire, his parents, John and Elizabeth, his brother, Fr. Robert Rutledge, and his sister, Violet. He is survived by his cousins, relatives, and friends. His brother, Rev. Fr. Robert Rutledge, passed away on July 4th, 2022, and his funeral was held at St. Muredach’s Cathedral in Ballina, with details live-streamed on ballinaparish.org.
Final Days
Mr. Rutledge spent his final days in the compassionate care of the staff at St. Augustine’s Home in Ballina.
