Sinaloa Empowers Women with National Self-Defense Training
CULIACÁN, Sin., March 5, 2026 – The Sinaloa Institute of Physical Culture and Sports (ISDE) is joining the national “Unstoppable Women” campaign by hosting a National Personal Defense Class, focused on equality and violence prevention. The free event will take place this Sunday at 9 a.m. At the facilities of the Sports High Performance Center (CARD).
Joint Initiative for Women’s Empowerment
The activity is a collaborative effort between the Government of Mexico, the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE), the Government of the State of Sinaloa, the ISDE, and the Women’s Secretariat (SEMUJERES). The goal is to equip girls and women aged 8 and older with fundamental self-defense skills as a preventative measure against violence and to bolster their personal safety.
State Government Support
The State Government, under the leadership of Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, is actively supporting the initiative, reaffirming its commitment to gender equality and the eradication of violence against women in Sinaloa. Participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt.
Judo-Based Training Led by Sara Medina
The class will be directed by judo coach Sara Medina, who emphasized the importance of the event in commemorating International Women’s Day. “First of all, it is to commemorate Women’s Day, to validate the fact that women have a voice, have a vote, and can defend themselves,” she stated. Medina highlighted the significance of providing a space where women feel included, heard, and supported by both sports and government institutions.
Principles of Judo for Self-Defense
Medina explained that the class will be based on the principles of judo, a martial art derived from Jujitsu, specifically designed for self-defense. “In judo we take advantage of the opponent’s strength to execute an action. The reaction-action to any type of attack is very critical. There are various defense and counterattack techniques, even on the ground, that allow us to neutralize a situation without causing harm, simply by defending,” she explained.
Sinaloa’s Female Athletes to Participate
The event will also feature participation from prominent Sinaloa athletes, particularly those who have achieved success in national and international competitions. These athletes will contribute to the initiative by offering support and encouragement.
ISDE’s Commitment to Equality and Safe Spaces
Through this activity, the ISDE reaffirms its dedication to promoting equality, sports, and the creation of secure environments that foster the comprehensive development and empowerment of women throughout Sinaloa.
