Stephen Curry Sets Late-Career Record Against Orlando Magic
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry scored 41 points on Saturday night at Chase Center, sealing a 126-119 overtime victory against the Orlando Magic with 17 points in the final seven minutes. The performance marks Curry’s second 40-point game of the season’s first month and the 77th of his 18-year career. More significantly, it stands as his 16th 40-point outing since turning 35 years old, surpassing LeBron James at 15 and Michael Jordan at 12 for the most of all time.
It makes me super proud of the work that’s gone in, especially with some injuries and all that,
Curry said after the game. But just the idea I could still get to a certain level you kind of feed off of that. Especially when it’s in a winning fashion like tonight, where we needed all of them. I appreciate the longevity.
Magic Surge Forces Overtime at Chase Center
The Warriors needed every point from their veteran star to fend off a persistent 2-7 Magic squad. Orlando erased a 16-point first-half deficit and grabbed a six-point lead in the fourth quarter. Curry responded by scoring 12 points in the final 2:21 of regulation, draining two deep 3-pointers, a layup, two free throws, and a tough runner with 25 seconds left to put Golden State ahead by two points.
That was an impossible shot,
Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of Curry’s late runner through traffic. So much traffic. That was a 12-foot sort of running, float, hook, whatever you call it. To put that off the glass, he’s one of one. I don’t know if anyone else in the world can make that shot.
Orlando answered immediately when Jamal Cain tipped in a layup with two seconds remaining on the clock to force the extra period.
Reserves secure seventh straight win in overtime
With Curry resting to begin the extra period, Golden State’s bench unit took control of the floor. Backup center Charles Bassey scored the first four points of overtime, and rookie Yaxel Lendeborg contributed 23 points overall, hitting a wing 3-pointer to extend the Warriors’ lead to five.
Kerr subbed Curry back in to finish the contest. He added two floaters and a free throw in overtime to secure the 126-119 victory. The win marks seven in a row for the Warriors, who join the 1950-51 Boston Celtics as the only teams in league history to immediately follow an 0-3 start with a seven-game winning streak.
