GameStop Declares Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U as ‘Retro’ Consoles

GameStop has officially designated the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U as “retro consoles,” sparking nostalgia among gamers and offering a new trade-in incentive. The move reflects the evolving definition of “retro” in the gaming world and provides opportunities for gamers to cash in on their older hardware.

What Defines a ‘Retro’ Console?

Determining what qualifies a console as “retro” is a subject of ongoing debate within the gaming community. Considerations range from the transition from 2D to 3D graphics to the advent of online gaming and the adoption of digital connections. GameStop’s criteria, as outlined in a recent statement, include the presence of component cables, the inability to play Fortnite, and the consoles’ launch dates coinciding with the George W. Bush presidency.1

The Newly Designated Retro Consoles

  • Xbox 360: Released in 2005.
  • PlayStation 3: Released in 2006.
  • Wii U: Released in 2012.

These consoles now join other systems considered retro, such as the Sega Saturn and Nintendo DS.12

Trade-In Incentives and Policy Changes

GameStop is currently offering a limited-time trade-in bonus for retro consoles and related accessories. Customers who trade in a retro console, games, or accessories will receive an additional 10% in store credit, valid until March 21st.3

In a significant policy shift, GameStop will now accept defective retro consoles for trade-in, even if they are non-operable, missing accessories, or cosmetically damaged, provided they can still be powered on.43

GameStop’s Reassurance to Gamers

Acknowledging the sentimental value these consoles hold for many gamers, GameStop reassured players that the reclassification doesn’t diminish their coolness or imply that owners are “old.”1
