Gemini Gains Powerful Latest Editing Tools for Nano Banana Images

Google is enhancing Gemini’s image editing capabilities, specifically for images generated using its Nano Banana models. Updates spotted in the latest beta version of the Google app promise a more streamlined and feature-rich editing experience, addressing a previous limitation where Gemini-created images couldn’t be directly marked up for edits.

Streamlining the Editing Workflow

Currently, editing images with Gemini requires downloading the image and then re-uploading it to access markup tools. Google aims to simplify this process by integrating the editing interface directly into the Gemini experience. Reporting by Android Authority first highlighted the changes, which were spotted in version 17.10.54.sa.arm64 (beta) of the Google app.

New Editing Features on the Horizon

The updated interface introduces several key improvements:

• Text Box for Edit Descriptions: A dynamic text box is being tested, allowing users to describe desired edits directly within the markup interface, eliminating the necessitate to switch back and forth between the markup tools and the chat window.
• Resize Tool: Users will soon be able to manage image format with options for Square, Portrait, and Landscape layouts.
• Effects Tool: While still in early development and currently non-functional, an “Effects” tool suggests the potential for more advanced image manipulation options in the future.

Nano Banana 2: Enhanced Image Generation

These editing improvements reach on the heels of the release of Nano Banana 2, which brings improved image quality and character consistency to Gemini’s image generation capabilities. Nano Banana 2 leverages the Gemini 3.1 Flash Image model and can now generate images in up to 4K resolution. It also demonstrates improved accuracy in generating and translating text within images.

Expanding Accessibility of Advanced Features

Previously, some advanced features, such as improved reasoning and comprehension skills, were limited to paying Gemini subscribers. Nano Banana 2 extends these capabilities to a wider user base, offering a more refined and accessible image generation experience.

Availability

As with any beta feature, the rollout timeline for these editing tools remains uncertain. Android Police notes that the feature had to be manually enabled in the beta version, indicating it is not yet widely available. However, these updates signal Google’s commitment to enhancing Gemini’s image generation and editing capabilities, potentially attracting more users to the platform.
