A Father’s Legacy Continues: German Exchange Student Finds Unexpected Connection in Minnesota

Bovey, Minnesota – For Henri Kuckels, a teenager from Cologne, Germany, a student exchange program to northern Minnesota became more than just a year abroad; it became a poignant connection to his family’s past. What began as a dream fueled by a love of hockey unexpectedly intertwined with his father’s own exchange student experience 38 years prior, creating a remarkable story of fate and community.

A Family History Returns to the Iron Range

Henri’s journey began with an application to FLAG International, a nonprofit student exchange organization. His passion for hockey, a relatively uncommon sport in Germany, set him apart. As FLAG International Regional Manager Jessa Preimesberger learned more, she discovered Henri’s father had been an exchange student in northern Minnesota decades earlier. The details were hazy – the exact town was unknown, and the host family had since passed away, leaving only memories.

A Local Coordinator’s Intuition

FLAG International Local Coordinator Maggie Vekich, based in Bovey, Minnesota, felt a strong pull to place Henri with a family in the Iron Range area. Driven by intuition, she found the Nielsen family, who eagerly welcomed Henri into their home. The Nielsens, with twin sons Brayden and Bryce, shared Henri’s deep love for hockey, creating an immediate bond.

An Unbelievable Coincidence

The connection deepened in an astonishing way. Upon receiving his school assignment, Henri discovered he would be attending Greenway High School – the very same school his father had attended as an exchange student 38 years ago. The coincidence was entirely unplanned, with no prior knowledge of his father’s past school.

Embracing the Minnesota Experience

Henri quickly immersed himself in American life. He joined the Greenway High School football team as a kicker, mirroring his father’s experience. He then eagerly joined the hockey team, fulfilling a long-held dream. Jamie Nielsen, Henri’s host mother, noted the support of Henri’s host brothers, Brayden and Bryce, was instrumental in his integration into the hockey community. The family attended numerous games, including University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldog games, World Junior games (including USA vs. Germany and USA vs. Finland), and local high school section and state tournaments. Beyond hockey, Henri embraced a range of Minnesota outdoor activities, from pontooning and jet skiing to experiencing hunting and fishing. He became known as a “GNK Titan” on the football field and a “Raider” during hockey season.

A Lasting Impact

Henri’s time in Greenway has been transformative. He has expressed his deep appreciation for the community and the experiences he’s gained. He is set to return to Cologne, Germany, on June 6th, 2026, to pursue his college education, carrying with him cherished memories of his Minnesota adventure.
