Google Chat Enhances Meet Collaboration with Dedicated Meetings Section
Google Chat is introducing a dedicated “Meetings” section designed to streamline conversations and note-keeping from Google Meet. This update aims to address a common user frustration: the difficulty of rediscovering past meeting discussions that were previously mixed within regular message lists.
Improved Organization for Meeting Follow-Ups
The new feature organizes chat history from completed meetings into a dedicated space within the Google Chat sidebar. This ensures that follow-up discussions aren’t lost among daily direct messages. Google previously integrated messages from Google Meet into Google Chat, but these conversations were initially stored as direct messages, making it challenging to search for specific chats, follow up on action items, or locate vital notes.
Dedicated Section for Past and Future Meetings
According to a Google Workspace update, users will soon be able to group all past and future meeting conversations into one central area. Google explains that once a meeting concludes, the conversation—if used—seamlessly moves into this section, providing a persistent space for ongoing follow-ups. This is particularly valuable for teams as meeting follow-up often extends beyond the initial video call.
Optional Feature with User Control
Google is not automatically enabling this feature. Users must opt-in to add the “Meetings” section to their Google Chat view. During the rollout, some users may receive an in-app banner or tooltip prompting them to try the feature. The company also states that the section can be removed at any time via the action menu and can be reordered according to user preferences.
How to Activate the Meetings Section
Users who don’t see the banner or tooltip can manually activate the feature through the following steps:
- Open Google Chat.
- Locate the three-dot menu in the conversation list section.
- Select “Create a meeting section.”
- Click “Create.”
Once activated, the “Meetings” section will appear in the conversation list, making it easier to separate meeting chat history from other conversations.
Addressing the Challenge of Digital Meeting Documentation
The core challenge with digital meeting chat isn’t just sending messages during the meeting. it’s retrieving decisions, links, reminders, and notes shared during the session. The dedicated section in Google Chat aims to meet the needs of organizations that rely on quick documentation. Meeting notes aren’t always formalized in documents, making chat conversations valuable work archives.
Strengthening Google Chat’s Role in the Workspace Ecosystem
This change reinforces Google Chat’s position as a central hub for collaboration within the Workspace ecosystem. Google intends to unify communication across Gmail, Chat, Meet, and Spaces, ensuring work follow-up isn’t fragmented across multiple platforms. From a user experience perspective, this separation can reduce friction when revisiting discussion results, particularly for users with a high volume of direct messages.
Feature Availability
The rollout of the “Meetings” section feature has begun and is expected to be available to all users by mid-April. This feature will be accessible to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual customers, and personal Google account users, extending the update beyond large enterprises to include independent workers, small teams, and general users who regularly use Google Meet.
