Google Code Reveals Tamba, a New Social Network Linked to YouTube

Google is developing a new standalone social network called Tamba that links directly to YouTube, according to code discovered in a recent software update.

20minutos.es reported that references to the unannounced platform surfaced inside the YouTube app for Android.

The software package runs under the identifier `com.google.android.youtube.sandbox`, which separates the experience from the main video platform. Analysts spotted the references inside version 21.44.534 of the Android application, according to 20minutos.es. Google has not yet confirmed whether it plans an official commercial launch for the app.

The project includes a distinct visual identity featuring a bold-lettered name, a doodle-like shape, and a centered play symbol. GD en Español reported that the package contains 38 hand-drawn icons covering core platform elements like home screens, search bars, cameras, inboxes, and audio recording.

Code references indicate that Google is testing the software across multiple operating systems using experimental identifiers. GD en Español noted that the project relies on tags like `ANDROID_SANDBOX` and `IOS_SANDBOX` under a broader initiative called Project Sandbox.

Users can follow other accounts, manage private profiles with follow requests, and exchange direct messages, photos, and videos. GD en Español reported that the code supports group chats alongside features to like posts, Shorts, and comments using heart reactions.

The platform lets users reply to content using voice notes or short videos instead of text alone. GD en Español noted that friends can play Shorts directly inside active chat threads without leaving the conversation interface.

YouTube WANTS TO BE INSTAGRAM by launching Tamba | The Recuento Go

Google has not announced a formal release date or confirmed if Tamba will debut as an independent app. 20minutos.es reported that the platform might serve as a testing environment for new social features before they roll out to YouTube.

GD en Español noted that the experimental sandbox setup means the project could also remain behind the scenes or never reach the public.
