Gordon Snell, a British author of children’s literature and scriptwriter best known as the husband of acclaimed Irish novelist Maeve Binchy, has died at the age of 93. The Irish Times reported his death on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.

Early Life and Career

Born in Singapore in 1932, Snell spent his early childhood there with his parents during the British colonization period. He and his mother relocated to Australia in 1942 following the Japanese invasion of Singapore, even as his father was taken prisoner during the Japanese occupation. The family reunited after the war and moved to the United Kingdom. Snell attended Geelong College in Victoria, Australia, before completing his secondary education at Dauntsey’s School in Wiltshire, England. He later studied at Oxford University, where he was a classmate of Bernard Donoughue.

Writing Career

Snell authored numerous children’s books, including Dangerous Treasure (1994), The Mystery of Monk Island (1995), The Curse of Werewolf Castle (1996), and The Phantom Horseman (1997). His other works include The Case of the Mystery Graves (1998), The Secret of the Circus (2000), The Library Ghost (2000), and Fear at the Festival (2001). He also worked as a freelance producer for the BBC and wrote scripts for RTÉ, including the popular children’s show Wanderly Wagon.

Marriage to Maeve Binchy

Snell married Irish author Maeve Binchy in 1977. The couple met at the BBC and shared a deep connection through their love of literature. According to an interview with the Irish Times in 2023, Snell described how he and Binchy bonded over Bertrand Russell’s A History of Western Philosophy, discovering they were both convinced by each chapter independently. He noted that they “rejoiced in each other’s successes” and felt no jealousy towards one another’s accomplishments.

Binchy passed away in 2012. Snell continued to live in the home they shared in Dalkey, Ireland.
