Orlando Magic Salvage Three-Game Road Trip at 2-3

The Orlando Magic sit at a 2-3 record after salvaging their three-game road trip with a 121-114 victory against the Toronto Raptors on Friday. Following a rough start to the young NBA season, the team’s early rotation players have experienced vastly different fortunes on the floor.

Starting Lineup Struggles and Spark Plugs

Jalen Suggs appeared in the Magic’s first three games but struggled to find an offensive rhythm. He connected on just one of his nine attempts from beyond the arc, shooting 35.7 percent from the floor while providing moments of defensive disruption. That earned the guard a D grade.

Desmond Bane endured an equally difficult opening stretch, hitting just 4 of his first 19 three-point attempts over his initial two games. The seven-year veteran found his footing during Friday’s win in Toronto, netting a season-high 28 points built on six made three-pointers. Orlando requires Bane to maintain that offensive spark while Suggs and Paolo Banchero miss time, handing him a B- grade.

Franz Wagner played excellent basketball outside of a quiet night against the Raptors on Wednesday, though his three-point shot remains a work in progress. Wagner has acted as a primary creator, displaying strong floor vision and craftiness inside the arc to earn an A grade.

Paolo Banchero played roughly 1.5 games before suffering an injury, displaying stellar play prior to his absence. Banchero’s performance was categorized as incomplete but graded his limited sample at an A level.

Wendell Carter Jr. provided a physical presence inside, scoring 20 points in three of his first five appearances. That production marks a stark contrast to his previous output, where he reached the 20-point threshold only five times across 78 games. Carter received a B+ for his rebounding and scoring impact.

Top Reserves Provide Bench Production

Anthony Black missed the entire preseason alongside the team’s first two regular-season matchups, but he returned without missing a beat. Over three contests, Black averaged 14.3 points and 5.3 assists while shooting 53.1 percent overall and 57.1 percent from deep on 8-of-14 shooting, earning an A- grade.

Head coach Sean Sweeney gave Tristan da Silva a green light, and the third-year forward capitalized by taking over 70 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. Da Silva has converted 47.1 percent of his three-point attempts, securing a B+ grade for understanding and executing his role.

Jamal Cain delivered a mixed bag of results off the bench, though he posted a perfect 5-of-5 shooting night for 13 points in Friday’s victory. Cain received a C grade, highlighting his defensive motor and rebounding.

Jase Richardson posted quieter numbers with averages of 5.6 points and 2.2 rebounds, but he acted as an effective spot-up shooter and floor connector. Richardson shot 45.5 percent from long distance while battling at the point of attack defensively, pulling a B- grade.
