Trump Administration Continues Pursuit of Greenland Amidst Danish Rejection and NATO Deal

The second administration of Donald Trump continues to seek closer ties with Greenland, despite repeated rejections from Denmark and Greenlandic leaders. Recent developments include a proposed hospital ship deployment, a submarine crew evacuation, and ongoing diplomatic efforts to address U.S. Security concerns in the Arctic.

U.S. Interest in Greenland: A Historical Overview

The United States has a long-standing interest in Greenland, dating back to discussions during World War II and previous attempts to purchase the territory. During his first presidency, Trump publicly explored the possibility of a purchase, a proposal firmly rejected by both Denmark and Greenland. Leaders in Greenland and Denmark have repeatedly stated that Greenland is not for sale.

Recent Escalations and Diplomatic Efforts

The current diplomatic crisis escalated in 2025, with the Trump administration threatening potential annexation of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. This led to concerns of a US–EU trade war after Trump threatened a 25% import tax on European Union goods unless Denmark ceded Greenland. However, at the 2026 Davos conference, Trump reversed his position, pledging not to leverage force or tariffs to annex Greenland.

To address U.S. Security concerns in the Arctic, a U.S.-Denmark-Greenland working group has been established, though details remain confidential. This follows a “framework” deal with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to ensure greater U.S. Influence in the region.

Healthcare Offer and Danish Response

President Trump recently announced plans to send a hospital ship to Greenland, claiming the territory’s population was not receiving adequate healthcare. However, Denmark’s Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen refuted this claim, stating that Greenlandic residents have access to free healthcare, either within Greenland or in Denmark. Poulsen also noted that Greenland and Copenhagen recently signed an agreement to improve patient treatment in Danish hospitals.

Submarine Crew Evacuation and Royal Visit

In a separate incident, the Danish Arctic Command evacuated a crew member from a U.S. Submarine off the coast of Nuuk after the sailor requested urgent medical attention.

King Frederik X of Denmark recently completed a three-day visit to Greenland, demonstrating support for the territory and emphasizing the wellbeing of the Greenlandic people. This visit, his third to the island in less than two years, underscores Denmark’s commitment to the region.

Danish Concerns Remain

Despite the shift away from threats of annexation, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen believes that President Trump still desires to own Greenland.
