Russell Henley Champions Debate Over The Players Championship’s Major Status

Five-time PGA Tour winner Russell Henley recently sparked debate by stating his belief that The Players Championship should be considered a major championship. His comments, made during his press conference at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, align with a growing sentiment within the golf world, though not universally shared.

Henley’s Stance: The Players as a Major

Henley, the defending champion of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, explained his position on Tuesday at Bay Hill. He believes The Players Championship, held at TPC Sawgrass, deserves recognition alongside the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open Championship.

“I mean, I believe it’s a major. It’s our home tournament. I don’t know the statistics on like when they say ‘best field in golf’ or whatever, but it is,” Henley stated. PGATour.com

He emphasized the tournament’s history, challenging course, and the caliber of past champions as reasons for its major status. “You glance at the past champions and… it hasn’t really favored any one player. People typically don’t win it back-to-back unless you’re Scottie [Scheffler],” he added.

Brandel Chamblee and the PGA Tour’s Push

Henley’s view is shared by Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee, who has gone further, arguing that The Players is not only a major but the “best major.” Chamblee cited the tournament’s consistently strong field and the difficulty of defending a title as evidence.

The PGA Tour, under recent CEO Brian Rolapp, appears to be actively promoting this perspective, with marketing materials recently stating, “March is going to be major.”

Rory McIlroy’s Dissenting Opinion

Not all golfers agree with this assessment. Rory McIlroy, a two-time Players Champion, expressed a more traditional view. While acknowledging the tournament’s importance, he believes in maintaining the historical significance of the four existing majors.

“Look, I’d love to have seven majors instead of five, that sounds great. But I’m a traditionalist, I’m a historian of the game. We have four major championships,” McIlroy said at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. PGATour.com

Still, McIlroy did concede that The Players has a stronger identity than the PGA Championship.

Henley’s Recent Performance

Russell Henley won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2025, finishing at 11-under par. PGATour.com As of March 5, 2026, Henley is ranked 7th in the world (OWGR), with career earnings of $47,298,299. PGATour.com This season, he has 3 top 25 finishes in 4 events.

Looking Ahead to The Players Championship
