Five-time PGA Tour winner Russell Henley recently sparked debate by stating his belief that The Players Championship should be considered a major championship. Henley’s view is shared by Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee, who has gone further, arguing that The Players is not only a major but the “best major.” Chamblee cited the tournament’s consistently strong field and the difficulty of defending a title as evidence.

The PGA Tour, under recent CEO Brian Rolapp, appears to be actively promoting this perspective, with marketing materials recently stating, “March is going to be major.”

Rory McIlroy’s Dissenting Opinion

Not all golfers agree with this assessment. Rory McIlroy, a two-time Players Champion, expressed a more traditional view. While acknowledging the tournament’s importance, he believes in maintaining the historical significance of the four existing majors.

“Look, I’d love to have seven majors instead of five, that sounds great. But I’m a traditionalist, I’m a historian of the game. We have four major championships,” McIlroy said at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. PGATour.com
