Third Space Theater Launches With A Night at the Theater in Petersburg

A new Petersburg theater group will stage its debut production of paired dramatic scenes on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1, 2026, at the Wright Auditorium, KFSK reported. The newly formed Third Space Theater aims to give adult actors in the community additional performance opportunities with a focus on drama rather than the comedies typically staged by the longstanding Mitkof Mummers troupe.

Performances begin at 7 p.m., and tickets cost $10. Elsa Wintersteen directs the production alongside her husband, Matt, and high school student Quinn Rafferty. Wintersteen, who serves as the local high school drama teacher, stated that the group’s name stems from the sociological concept of a third space where people gather socially for free.

The production features six scenes from six different plays, organized around the theme of three meetings and three partings. Each scene utilizes a cast of only two actors. During a recent weeknight rehearsal, Abbey Hardie played Doctor Faustus alongside Orin Pierson as the demon Mephistopheles, performing material from the 16th-century play by Christopher Marlowe. Other featured works include William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, David Auburn’s Proof, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, and Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House.

Actors Prepare Minimalist Scenes For Wright Auditorium Stage

The streamlined format relies heavily on spoken word rather than extensive sets or action. Hardie noted that the minimalist staging places unique demands on the performers. “It’s built on dialog. You really have to keep everybody intrigued with the dialog, there’s not too many props and there’s not too much action going on,” she said. Pierson echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the intimacy of working with just one scene partner. “It’s rich, for sure. We can pay close attention,” he said. “And to have this much time to work on one conversation, it’s been really satisfying.”

Not every selection centers on the macabre. Petersburg High School alum Zane Browning and senior Rebecca Midkiff are rehearsing a scene from Romeo and Juliet. Midkiff pointed out the practical challenges of staging classical verse for modern audiences. “It’s meant to be performed, and especially when we’re so far removed from the language, it’s really hard to actually understand it if you’re not watching it,” she said. The two actors are dating in real life, a dynamic they noted adds a distinct layer to their performance.

Production Logistics And Audience Guidelines

Wintersteen brought her experience from leading high school students to Edinburgh over the summer to perform Dracula at the world’s largest theater festival. While she lacked the energy to mount a full-length play this fall, she wanted to produce a themed sampling of scenes. “It’s not uncommon in the theatrical world to do shows like this, where you have just samplings of scenes that are all united by a specific theme,” she said.

Organizers noted that the production contains explicit language and is recommended for audience members aged 12 and older. The final performance takes place on Nov. 1, 2026, following the opening night on Oct. 30.
