High Mountain Resort: Goulash & 3 Dumplings for 575 Crowns

The PrahaIN.cz server spoke with reader Jiří Petr on Tuesday, January 27. He spent the beginning of the year with his girlfriend in the mountains, specifically in the Austrian Mölltaler Gletscher resort in Carinthia. Mr. Jiří and I discussed the journey, accommodation and skiing conditions, as well as drinking and local gastronomy.

Mr. Jiří, a teacher by profession, literally melted over the environment, the sky and the snow. At the time, he said that local prices were favorable. He and his partner visited several restaurants and bars and enjoyed not only pasta, but also spaghetti or sweet dumplings.

According to his testimony, the prices ranged from 200 to 400 crowns.

Shortly after we agreed with the reader and prepared the article, he contacted us again.

There was a hint of guilt in his voice. “You know, I forgot that the amounts are quite different. We visited a local bar at an altitude of 2,800 meters and the prices here are perhaps unacceptable,” he told PrahaIN.cz.

He immediately sent a printed menu that confirms his words. Beef goulash with bread dumpling costs 575 crowns, smoked sausage with a side dish 445 crowns, stuffed pasta with butter costs 400 crowns, spicy turkey curry with basmati rice is available high in the mountains for 520 crowns, and roast pork with bulgur and vegetables will cost diners 464 crowns. Probably the cheapest item is the so-called Veggie Power (tofu, bulgur, vegetables), which costs 400 crowns.

Desserts are no less expensive.

Only the soup is cheap

A pancake with cottage cheese or an apple strudel with whipped cream or vanilla sauce costs 250 crowns, one large dumpling with vanilla sauce and poppy seeds costs 370 crowns, and a daily cake with whipped cream can be purchased for 190 crowns. The children’s menu is significantly cheaper, which is around 250 crowns and you can choose from spaghetti, small pizza, steak or larger portions of fries.

“We have never been to this bar or restaurant. The prices here are really high, but the tables were occupied. But I had the opportunity to stay for a while, the view is unique. I haven’t experienced anything like it for a long time,” our reader described the silhouette of the High Tauers. “We saved money on accommodation and transport, so I didn’t buy anything here. I just took a picture of the menu, perhaps as a warning to some Czech tourists that the prices are really different high in the mountains,” concluded Mr. Jiří.

Perhaps only the soups are kept relatively low in the mentioned establishment, there are three to choose from and not one of them exceeds the threshold of 130 crowns.

The restaurant also has a sun terrace, a winter garden with a conference room and a spacious seating area specialized for group and social events. Nearby is a hostel with fifty beds.
